The Grand Canyon of the Pacific
A favorite destination on Kauai is Waimea Canyon. The canyon is located in 4,345 acre Koke'e State Park at the southwestern end of the island. Hawaiian words, "Wai" for fresh water, and "Mea" for red, refer to the heavy clay-colored water that flows from the canyon following heavy rainfalls. It is best to call ahead for weather information in the canyon so that you'll know what to expect when you arrive. Please call 808-245-6001. The air there will feel at least 10º cooler than in Kiahuna Plantation.
The drive isn't far, about an hour each way, and well worth the trip for sightseers and hikers alike. Without getting out of your vehicle, there are many lookouts that provide excellent views of the 3,500 ft. deep gorge from the canyon rim. Be sure to take your camera. For the adventurous, canyon hiking trails are numerous. We recommend stopping at the Ranger Station for maps before setting off. Some trails require a pass or permit. You won't find a lot in amenities here, not even a gas station, so plan to fill your gas tank and take snacks or a picnic with you. The area tends to be shrouded in clouds by afternoon, so we suggest you make Waimea Canyon a morning adventure.
